1967年，我再次奉派驻外使馆工作，行前回上海探亲。在火车上相遇，才知道彼此各自的情况。我大学毕业进了外交部，辅銮从上海行知学校毕业后，又考入了南京师范学院美术系深造，后来在南京艺术学院任教。平时我们难得见面，我在国外或在北京总是常从报纸和杂志上得到辅銮的信息，常见到他的新作发表，当时我和夫人真为少年时代的同窗好友已步入了知名画家的行列而高兴。
In 1967, I was assigned to work in an embassy abroad. Before leaving I went to Shanghai to visit my family. On the train, I met him and began to know each other’s information after our separateness. I entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after graduation, while Fuluan entered the painting department of Nanjing Normal University after graduated from Shanghai Zhixing Art School, and then stayed there to teach. It is difficult for us to meet each other in our daily time. I usually get Fuluan’s information form newspapers and magazines at home and abroad. I can often see his publication of new works that make my wife and me very glad for our classmate and old friend having become a well-known painter.
有一件事我永不会忘记，他大学一年级暑假，用节省下来的零用钱，带着许多自己的习作，独自买张火车票去北京，寻找全国著名画家教授，登门求教。记得有中央美术学院的吴作人，董希文，叶浅予等名家。这种大胆行为实在极代表他的性格，为艺术，为求知，锲而不舍
Here is one thing I will remember forever. It happened in his first year of college. He saved up all his pocket money for a ticket to Beijing, and visited many famous painters and professors at their homes with his exercises for their directions, including some respectful masters in China Central Academy of Fine Arts, such as Wu Zuoren, Dong Xiwen, Ye Qianyu. This bravery behavior perfectly represents his character that is, never giving up struggle for art and knowledge.
从1948年到1951年我俩同班，在上海圣谊中学求学，该校是解放前以蒋家祥校长为首的，热心平民教育事业者集资创建的，有些是厦门大学教授和学生来义务兼课的，当然校舍和设备简陋，没有条件对有绘画才能的学生给予培养，辅銮家境贫寒，家中又无人擅长丹青，他的艺术之路全靠他自己的天赋加不懈努力，才考上当时上海唯一的一所艺术学校。
From 1948 to 1951, we were classmates at Shanghai Shengyi Middle School. This school was established on the funds from some persons who were enthusiasm for the civilian education with their leader, Jiang Jiaxiang, taking the position of schoolmaster. The teachers were professors and students from Xiamen University who worked in the school part-timely. And the classrooms and equipments were simple and shabby, without proper qualification to cultivate the gifted students. Fuluan came form a poor family and there was nobody in his family who was good at painting. So his roads of art totally depend on his talent and hard working, and so did it for his entering the only art school in Shanghai at that time.
我在艺术上是门外汉，但我非常喜爱他的作品，尤其是他笔下的花卉。看着这些画，往往不忍离去，我好像面对着我的老友—热情奔放，灵气闪动而又与世无争，身处逆境而不馁。辅銮虽已年届古稀，仍是才思敏捷，创作精力还是那么旺盛，我有理由期待他取得更大的成就。
I am a stranger of art, but I am very fond of his works, especially his flower paintings. I always cannot bear to part with those paintings just like I was facing my old friend again, seeing his glowing zest, his twinkling genius, his standing aloof from the worldly affairs and his gallantry while in adversity. Although Fuluan is an old man of seventy years old, he still keeps an active thinking and a creative impulsion. I am confident of his greater achievement in the near future.
