2007-04-20 Red•VanitasExhibitionbyLingJianLingJian《ILoveYou-IKillYou》LingJian《RedCherry》2006LingJian《TheEastisRedSeriesNo.2》2006LingJian《WhiteHairedWoman》香港 展览时间:2007-04-20-2007-05-19 开幕时间:2007-04-196:30pm–8:30pm 展览城市:香港-香港 展览机构:少励画廊 展览地址:MainGallery,21-31OldBaileyStreet,Central,HongKong 展览咨询:T+852-28698802F+852-25221528 展览介绍 SchoeniArtGalleryisdelightedtoannouncethedebutexhibitionofestablishedartist,LingJian,entitledRed•Vanitas,whichwewillbeshowcasingfromthe19thofApriltothe19thofMay2007.LingJian’snewestcollectionbarestestamenttotheevergrowingpotentialandaccomplishmentofthisextremelytalentedartist.Havinggraduatedin1986fromQinghuaUniversityArtCollege,Beijing,LingJiannowdivideshistimeasanindependentartistbetweenBerlinandBeijing.Itwouldn’tbeunfairtosaythatLingJianiscompletelyobsessedwithwomen,exceptthattheartisthimselfvoicesaratherilluminatingdisclaimer.Farfrombeingoverrunbyartisticidealsofaesthetic,LingJianstrivestoemulateasociallyrelevantcommentaryintohiswork.“Whatisthesignificanceofmy‘beauties?”Lingmuses,“Ifwelookattheevolutionaryhistoryofhumanity,womenarealwaysthesymbolofanera;wecanseethechangesofhumanityinthewayitrepresentswomenandthefemaleformthroughtheages.”LingJianisintenselyawareofthesignificanceofthisstatement,andfarfrombeingtheaimlessramblingsofamisogynistconsumedwithputtingwomenintheirplace,theyarerepresentedasiconsofaparticular,andindeed,locallyspecificsecularpopularculture.Inhispreviouscollection,LingJianquestionsthemodernunderstandingofreligionandhowthetotemicsymbolofGuanYinisreinterpretedincontemporaryunderstanding.Unafraidtoreinterprettherichiconographyofthisreligioussymbol,hisrenderingsofGuanJin,inamannerofspeaking,artisticallyreincarnateavisualechoofthemuchveneratedBuddhistGoddessofMercy–heisinasensestrivingforanewinterpretationofNirvana,onethatisunsettlingandslightlyplastic,muchlikewhatheissurroundedbyinChina’semergingsubculturethatisconsumedwiththeartificeandviceofvanity.Red•Vanitasisanunabasheddevelopmentofthesethemes.Still,ashis“beauties”standbeforeusonthecanvas,theirred,poutylipsarepartedandseduce.Poisedeternallyina“highfashion”pose,LingJian’stechniquemarswhatwouldotherwisebeaflawlessglossyimageoftheseanatomicallywarpedChinesewaifs.Thetermvanitas,derivedfromLatin,impliesthe,“vanityofvanities.”Red,thecolourofangerandpassion,hasotherimpliedconnotationsofpowerand,insomecases,mayforebodeawarning.CommentingonanerathatLingJiandescribesas,“ambivalent,”itcomesasnosurprisethathis,“‘beauties’arethesymbolofcontemporaryChina,thecomplacencewithnationalism,worthandhowwejudgebeauty.”WrittenbyAlexandraHamlynAcataloguewillbereleasedinconjunctionwiththisexhibition.Forhighresolutionimages,interviewarrangementsorfurtherinformationpleasecontactSelinaLiu. |
