SchoeniGalleryLtd.isdelightedtoannouncethemuchanticipated4thsoloexhibitionofartistZhangLinHaientitled“PurpleSeries.”Pre-eminentinhisfield,ZhangLinHai’scollectionofnewworksshowshowheisevolvingstylisticallyasanartistashefurtherdevelopshisscopeofimagination,andhismotifofbaldyoungboysagainstabackdropofapost-industrialaridwasteland.Moresonowthaneverbefore,ZhangLinHai’sonusisplacedontheindividual,ratherthananobliquefieldofthemasses.ZhangLinHaiisalsobringingastrongemotionalpiècederésistancetothefore,explicitlyarticulatingfeelingssuchassadness,fear,aneedforescape,bemusement,andevenmoredisconcerting,thevapidglareofshockorevenpossession.Thedenseterminalclustersofthegrasslandsarestillusedtogreateffecttoexplorethelandscapeofmemorythroughlocallyspecificsymbolsandtypographicalreference.Butnow,ZhangLinHaiborrowsfromhisuniformrepresentationofyouthtoenforcetheidentityoftheindividual–hissoloprotagonistspeeroutfromthecanvaswithlooksofbewildermentandemotion,sometimestearsarespillingdownthechubbycheeksofinjuredyouth.ZhangLinHai’spaintsinthecharacteristicgreysofhismutedandsombrepalette,hisfiguresaredepictedinmonochromeandattimesgarbedincrimson,ahighlightingtechniquethatbringsaharrowingandhauntingqualitytothecanvas.Inadditiontothisstylisticdevice,ZhangLinHaiisalsoexperimentingwithochreyellowsandterracottahues,throwinghismonochromefiguressharplyintorelief,moresoeventhanthecraggytipsthatspanthehorizon.ZhangLinHai’sworksfosteradiscoursethatimpliesthesignificanceandresonanceofpersonalboundaries,astheyareexpressedthroughandagainstsociety.Thetoneofhisworksismuchlessaboutstaringacrossafieldofmasses,orintoadizzyingheightofstrangelyandrogynousformsassimilatingintotoweringarchitecturaltowerslikethefabledtowerofBabel-theseheightsnolongerdescenddownupontheviewer.Spatially,ZhangLinHaipitsapanoramicexpanseagainsttherecognitionandsolaceofsolitude-thereseemstobeaneeriedimensionthathasnowbeeninfusedintohisworks,thusdenotingashiftinhisawarenessofthetranscendentalandotherworldly.Again,ZhangLinHaisurpasseshisalreadyestablishedheightsofachievementandartisticclairvoyance.Thisshowisonenottobemissed.　WrittenbyAlexandraHamlynZhangLinHai’smasterpieceshasbeencollectedandexhibitedinternationally;suchastheChinArttravelingmuseumexhibition,whichhasbeenshownGermany,Italy,Hungary,PolandandSpain.Inaddition,anotherinternationalprogrammewasheld,injointvision,withthedistinguishedMKMMuseumKüppersmühle,GermanylastJuly2005,wherethegallery’sexclusiveartistsZhangLinHaiandWangYiDongwereinvitedtoartisticallysupporttheircontemporaneousleaderinChineseContemporaryArt,CaiGuoQiang.ZhangLinHaiwasoneofthefinalistsinthe2003/2004SovereignContemporaryAsianArtCompetition–winningthesecond“SchoeniPrize”.
